Rain lashed against the attic window as Clara pawed through a trunk, her breath catching in ragged gasps. The eviction notice sat on her kitchen counter, mocking her with its official severity. She was two months behind, her business, a tiny bookstore, hemorrhaging money. She had to find something, anything, of value.

Her fingers closed around a brittle envelope. The paper was yellowed, the ink faded, but the familiar script on the front was unmistakable: “To the Board of Directors, Elmsworth & Sons.” Inside, a single sheet. Her mother’s signature, etched in a confident flourish, seemed to taunt her. This was the resignation letter. Why had she never known about this?
