She gripped the steering wheel so tight her knuckles were white. The highway blurred into a smear of greys and browns. Traffic crawled, mirroring her slow, agonizing crawl towards what felt like her only option. A cold dread, a heavy weight, settled in her gut, making her feel as though she were sinking.

Her phone buzzed. Another reminder, another demand. She ignored it, the sound grating on her frayed nerves. The sky was the same oppressive grey as her mood. Rain began to spatter against the windshield, each drop a tiny hammer blow against her already fragile composure.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. This was the only way. She pulled into the parking lot, and the realization hit her like a punch: the person she needed help from. And they'd been a nightmare.
