The flickering fluorescence of the bank felt like a judgment. Sarah clutched the printout – John’s name, the account number, the sickeningly large balance. Her stomach churned. The eviction notice sat on the kitchen counter, a stark white rectangle against the usual clutter. She’d tried selling her jewelry, pawning the good china, but it wasn't enough.

Her fingers trembled as she reread the numbers. Could this be real? Years of shared meals, shared laughter, all while he’d been hiding this…treasure. The irony stung, a cold splash against the heat rising in her chest.

She imagined him, the careful way he always managed the finances, the offhand comments about scrimping and saving. Now, all those conversations, all those reassurances, felt like a cruel joke. Her eyes blurred with unshed tears.
