The harsh fluorescent light of the convenience store seemed to magnify the tension that had been building in Henry all day. He'd found the bank statement tucked away in his wife's desk. The numbers seemed to glow in the dim light. The bills were overdue, the car needed repairs, and his job felt precarious. He felt as though the floor would collapse from under his feet.

He knew what he had to do. He had to act. He rubbed his hands together, his palms wet.

He stepped outside, into the cool night air. The streetlights cast long, distorted shadows. His mind raced, calculating, planning.
