The cramped apartment felt smaller than usual; the walls seemed to be closing in on David. He felt pinned down, suffocated by the demands of creditors and the relentless pursuit of his worries. The weight of unpaid debts had become unbearable. His breath hitched in his throat, and he found himself chewing on the inside of his cheek.

He caught a glimpse of Mrs. Hawthorne, casually sipping champagne on her patio. He knew she owned several properties, that she took trips to Europe, and that she never seemed to experience any form of economic hardship. His palms began to sweat.

He pictured her, so effortlessly at ease. He knew what he had to do. He would go, with a proposition.
