The weight of the missed mortgage payment pressed on John’s chest, making it difficult to breathe. He stared at the foreclosure notice, the words blurring before his eyes. His business had failed, his marriage was on the rocks, and he felt utterly defeated. He sank into his chair, the world spinning around him.

He saw Mr. Sterling, who lived next door, step out of a private jet. Mr. Sterling, who never seemed to work, who spent his days golfing and his evenings at fancy restaurants. A knot tightened in John's stomach.

He understood, in that moment, that he needed to swallow his pride. He would have to swallow his pride and beg.
