Gemotions

The chipped porcelain mug trembled in Martha's hands, nearly spilling the weak tea she'd brewed. Across the newly mowed lawn, Mr. Henderson, his face ruddy and jovial as always, was pointing at the ancient oak that straddled their property line. The sun beat down, making her skin prickle with heat, but the cold sweat on her palms seemed to intensify.

"Just a little trim, you know? Makes the place feel more... open," Mr. Henderson said, his voice carrying easily on the summer breeze. Martha gripped the mug tighter, her knuckles bone-white. Open. God, she needed anything but open. Everything felt exposed, vulnerable.

She managed a tight smile, the muscles in her face aching. "I'll have to think about it, Mr. Henderson." Her voice cracked slightly. Inside, a frantic knot was tightening in her chest. The thought of change, of anything being different, was a lead weight.
