The petition lay crumpled in Amelia’s hand, the ink smudged by her own tears. Cutting down the old oak was being billed as a “necessary improvement” by the HOA, but to her, it was a slow, agonizing eviction. The tree’s canopy provided a shelter against the harsh, unforgiving sun, a comforting presence during her days alone.

She paced the small living room, the worn rug soft beneath her bare feet. The walls seemed to close in, the air heavy with a sense of impending doom. Every tick of the clock echoed the countdown.
