He ignored the notice at first, leaving it on the counter, unread. He didn't want to know. But the insistent ping of his email, the whispered conversations of his neighbors, made denial impossible. He finally picked it up.

He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them, the paper a crumpled mess in his hands. He felt a cold dread creep into his bones. His life was in freefall. Where would he go? What would he do?

He slammed his fist on the table, the sound echoing in the silent room. He felt utterly and completely defeated, his options dwindling with each passing second. He was in a bind.
