"So, you're... Jewish now?" The words slipped out of David's mouth, laced with a bitterness he hadn't intended to express. His brother, usually the picture of nonchalance, was now beaming, radiating an infectious joy.

David felt a strange heat creep up his neck. He adjusted his tie, tugging at the knot as if it were suddenly constricting him. He focused on the details of the room. The cheap plastic chairs, the faded floral wallpaper, the sticky table.

“Well, good for you,” he said, forcing a smile that felt like a grimace. He wondered how long the novelty would last. He'd bet it wouldn't be long.
