David tossed the paperback onto the passenger seat of his car, the action almost violent. The title, "David's Journey: From Rags to Respect," seemed to taunt him. He slammed the car door, the sound echoing in the deserted parking lot. Respect? He barely respected himself.

He stared out the windshield, his gaze distant. The author had conveniently omitted the messy bits, the failures, the mistakes. The David in the book was a sanitized, simplified version, a stranger in his own life.

He started the engine, the rumble a welcome sound. He was furious. He wanted to find this author, confront them, and demand to know why they’d dared to present this fiction as fact. He drove away, the book lying abandoned, a weightless presence.
