The phone call had been a formality. But now, seeing David in the waiting room of the potential office, Emma felt her composure crack a little. She felt a wave of nausea.

He was chatting easily with the receptionist. His easy demeanor grated on her. She had spent weeks preparing, polishing her resume, practicing her interview answers.

She was the more qualified candidate. It was a fact. Yet, the way David moved and spoke... he probably thought he already had the job.

She busied herself by staring out the window, focusing on the distant city skyline, trying to block out his obnoxious presence.
