He had the audacity to hum as he walked into the kitchen. Liam, of course, was oblivious. The man prided himself on his "natural charm," which clearly extended to his phone conversations. Chloe watched him. The way his shoulders subtly tensed whenever the phone rang. The way he’d suddenly become incredibly interested in the state of the garden.

"Did you remember to water the basil?" she asked, her tone as sharp as a newly sharpened knife. She knew he hadn’t. He never did.

Liam merely shrugged. His usual response. And then, without even looking at her, he said, "Oh, I have to run out. Forgot I had an appointment." Chloe just stared, her jaw clenched, as he sauntered to the door.
