He spent the evening staring at the ceiling, the faint glow of the streetlights painting shifting patterns on the plaster. He had always been the diligent one, the loyal one. Sarah, the office newbie, made more money.

He had expected to move up the ladder. He had planned it all, mapped out the promotions, the raises, the future. Now, everything felt… off-kilter.

He reached over and turned on the television, the blue light washing over him. He flipped through the channels, searching for something, anything, to distract him from the bitter taste in his mouth.
