“Another day, another soul-crushing appointment,” thought Sarah, rolling her eyes as she walked toward her therapist’s office. She always brought a book to her sessions to make her seem intelligent, even though she usually didn’t read it. She selected a book at random from her bookshelf, a battered copy of “Pride and Prejudice.”

As she settled into the uncomfortable chair, a stiff sheet of stationary drifted from the pages. It was a love letter. She read the flowery words, her mouth twisting. What a waste of time. She looked up at her therapist, but he wasn't looking at her. Instead, he was staring out the window, a faraway look on his face.
