He had always found solace in the stories of Vivian Ainsworth. Her narratives had offered a refuge from the harsh realities of his own life. Now, the news struck him. He would not let it upset him. But he could not help but frown.

He began to clear the room of every Ainsworth book he owned, placing them in a cardboard box. He had never felt so betrayed. He could not remember when he had felt this empty.

He sealed the box with tape, the sound echoing in the silent room. He would do no more than that. He would move on.
