He listened to her, barely. Her words, like buzzing insects, were a persistent nuisance. He simply didn’t have the energy to care.

He examined his fingernails, inspecting for any imperfections. They were perfect. He looked at the floor again, and counted the tiles for the fifth time. He wanted to scream.

He made a show of checking his watch again, though he knew the time. He kept his gaze fixed on his watch, avoiding the gentle concerned glance she kept sending his way. He just wanted to go home.
