"Fantastic," Mark muttered under his breath. The department head had just finished the announcement. Professor Davies, his advisor, was taking a position at a research institute in Switzerland. Mark’s head was spinning. He’d poured years into Davies's lab, working on a project that now felt… pointless.

He pushed back from the table, his chair scraping loudly against the linoleum. The canteen seemed brighter, more obnoxious than usual. He grabbed a lukewarm coffee, feeling the bitterness cling to his tongue. He would have to start all over again.
