The news seemed to suck the air from the room. John stared at the email, a coldness spreading through his limbs. Professor Evans. Gone. He felt a sharp pang of… annoyance. He'd spent months perfecting his thesis proposal, and now he had to find another advisor.

He picked up the pen on his desk, clicking it repeatedly, the sound echoing in the silence. He tossed the pen aside and pushed his chair back, the harsh scrape of the metal legs against the floor a sudden, unpleasant sound. He stood up, and looked out the window. The campus looked drab and uninviting.
