He ran his fingers through his hair, a nervous habit he hadn't realized he had until now. He and Martin, a newcomer. The thought of the latter getting the same opportunity was enraging. He had toiled for years, giving up weekends, and even holidays.

He had heard the whispers, the office gossip, the comments. Martin, fresh out of university, was the “hot new thing.” The office was filled with praise, and compliments. He was furious at the sudden shift in attention.

He found himself avoiding eye contact, preferring to bury himself in his work. He knew it was a losing battle. The frustration was tangible, a physical weight that settled in his shoulders.
