The road trip was a mistake. She’d agreed, hoping, perhaps, that some shared time would soften the blow of the impending separation. Instead, the forced joviality of the drive, the endless playlists of “goodbye” songs, and the scenic views felt like a cruel joke.

She stared out the window, at the passing landscape, her jaw clenched. The air conditioning blasted, a futile attempt to cool the internal fever rising within her. The miles blurred into an indistinguishable mass.

Every cheerful comment, every attempt at connection, was met with a curt nod, a clipped response. She wanted to scream at him to stop it, to just shut up and acknowledge the gaping hole he was leaving in her life.
