The lawyer had explained it all: the will, the inheritance, and the inconvenient truth of another beneficiary. Liam sat in the sterile waiting room, tapping his foot, his gaze fixed on the floral carpet. He hated flowers. He hated the whole situation. He hated the thought of sharing anything, especially not his father's estate, with this unknown, uninvited person.

He was the only child. He had always been the only child. The thought of this other person, this interloper, getting a piece of what was rightfully his, filled him with a cold fury. He crossed his arms, leaning back against the uncomfortable chair. He was going to make sure that the meeting was short.

The lawyer emerged, gesturing to a door. Liam stood, his face a carefully constructed mask of civility. As he walked toward the door, he couldn't help but notice the nameplate: "Gabriella." He gave a small snort, shaking his head.
