He had always been the “responsible” one. The “practical” one. The one who chided her for her impulsive purchases. She’d found the account details tucked inside an old book. A children's book, ironically. The irony made her want to laugh.

She walked into the living room, where he was watching television. The room suddenly seemed too small, the air too thick. "Oh, honey," she said. "I forgot my debit card today. Could you grab me some milk for my tea?" She already knew the answer.

He frowned and went to the kitchen. She felt triumphant.
