The software developer’s code, a labor of love and intellectual property, was now the foundation of a popular, for-profit app. He found out through a casual conversation with a former colleague, who was now lavishly employed by the company that “borrowed” his code. He felt a chill creep up his spine.

He spent the rest of the day staring at his monitor, the lines of code that once felt like a source of pride now represented a betrayal. He picked at his fingernails, the rhythm of his tapping a harsh counterpoint to the hum of the machine.

He closed his eyes and inhaled slowly. He wished he could scrub the whole thing away.
