The dinner table conversation revolved around little Timmy and his imaginary friend, “Captain Wiggles.” My sister gushed over Timmy’s drawings, describing the character’s adventures in glowing detail. I focused on my meal, trying to ignore the details, the name, and the implications of it all.

The more they spoke, the more I felt my appetite evaporate. The very idea of the entity, the form it likely took in the drawings, sparked a deep unease. I pushed my plate away, unable to eat another bite. I have to change the subject, I thought.
