The feeling started in her gut, a slow, corrosive burn. The email, with its polite dismissal, felt like a personal insult. Chloe crumpled it, discarding it in the bin. She hated everything. The air felt charged, and every sound grated on her nerves. The insistent ticking of the clock on the wall seemed to mock her.

She stalked to the window, staring out at the rain-swept street. The world outside looked gray and lifeless. The thought of everything she had worked for, now gone, made her want to vomit. She opened the window, inhaling a deep breath of the cold, damp air.
