The email confirmation of her rejection made her physical. Grace felt a cold, oily slickness coat her skin. The air in her small room felt thick, almost solid. She clenched her jaw, her teeth grating together. It was as if someone had poured acid into her veins.

She stared out the window at the vibrant world she was supposed to be a part of. The cheerful birdsong seemed to mock her. The sunlight, usually welcome, felt intrusive.

She hated the thought of having to explain this, the humiliation, the feeling of utter worthlessness. She kicked at the leg of her desk, her foot connecting with a painful thud.
