Rain lashed against the windows of the lab, mirroring the tempest brewing inside Mark. He reread the email, the words blurring before his eyes. *Goodbye. Best of luck.* It was clipped, impersonal, and utterly devoid of the warmth he’d come to expect from Professor Davies. He felt a wave of nausea, a sudden urge to flee the sterile environment. He kicked a lab stool, sending it skittering across the floor. He wanted to scream, to tear the room apart. His breath hitched in his chest, shallow and rapid. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it tangled and unkempt.
