Gemotions

A wave of heat washed over Michael as he saw Sarah approach. He felt a constriction in his chest, making it hard to breathe. He excused himself from the conversation he was having, muttering something about needing air, and edged towards the open patio door.

The band started playing a slow song, and the air inside seemed to thicken, pressing in on him. He felt an intense need to escape, to put as much space as possible between himself and her. The very sight of her, the way she was smiling and chatting with another guest, felt… contaminating.

He fumbled with his phone, pretending to check a text, a flimsy shield against the perceived intrusion. The garden outside, with its carefully arranged fairy lights, suddenly looked oppressive. He couldn't wait to leave.
