The party, once filled with anticipation, suddenly felt unbearable. The lights, the music, the chatter – it all felt like a jarring cacophony. She caught sight of Mark, smiling and making small talk with a group of people. The sight made her want to retch.

He'd spent months talking about his important role in the tech company, and about the influence he had in the office. Now she knew the truth. His words, the stories, it was all fake. It felt like something had crawled under her skin.

She excused herself, pushing through the crowd with an urgency she couldn't explain. She needed air, to be away from him, from the scene, from the evidence of his deception. She walked out into the cool night air and leaned against a wall, struggling to catch her breath.
