The air in the school hallway felt thick, suffocating. David's chest felt constricted. His son, Leo, would have Mr. Abernathy. The thought of this man's influence on his son filled David with an almost physical revulsion.

He remembered the awful, tight feeling of being trapped in his classroom. Abernathy's classroom. The way the man's breath smelled like old cigarettes and disappointment. He tried to compose himself.

He forced himself to walk towards the classroom. He would keep his distance from the old man. The less exposure, the better.
