The sheer improbability of it hit him first. He'd gone to his childhood home to help clear out his old bedroom, but he’d stumbled upon a hidden trove. Beneath the floorboards, carefully wrapped in plastic, were years worth of his schoolwork.

He pulled out a wrinkled history report. He remembered the late nights, the pressure to get good grades. He felt a strange unease, a cold knot forming in his stomach.

His breath hitched as he flipped through the pages. The handwriting, the naive perspectives… it was like looking at a stranger. He dropped the paper, as though it were radioactive, and turned away. The room seemed suddenly smaller, more oppressive.
