He leaned against the brick wall, the rough texture offering no solace. The news, delivered with casual indifference, had knocked the wind out of him. A sour taste coated his tongue, and he swallowed hard, trying to keep down the rising bile. The thought of the lost anticipation, the dashed hopes, the wasted time and effort, sparked a deep, burning resentment within him. He shoved his hands into his pockets, but the cold did nothing to soothe the internal heat. He desperately wanted to disappear.
