Michael slammed the file cabinet shut, the metal echoing loudly in the otherwise quiet office. He’d seen the salary figures on the HR portal. Sarah, who’d been hired last month, earned more than him. He’d trained her! A bitter taste coated his tongue.

His lunch, a perfectly healthy salad, suddenly seemed repulsive. He pushed it away, the lettuce wilting under the fluorescent glare. He wanted to scream.

He saw Sarah chatting with the department head, her laughter bright and effortless. He wanted to turn away, but couldn't. He watched her, his jaw clenching. Every movement, every gesture, was a further affront.
