The musty smell of the basement clung to Marcus's clothes. He’d been tasked with clearing out his grandfather's belongings, a chore he’d been putting off. The task itself felt like a violation.

He found the letter in a box labelled “Important Documents.” It was a letter addressed to his father. The script was hasty, almost frenzied. He began to read it, but his face contorted. The letter contained the kind of raw emotion he had spent his life avoiding, a sentimentality that seemed obscene.

He felt a prickling sensation on his skin as he read of apologies and devotion. He slammed the box shut, a sharp crack echoing in the quiet basement. He didn’t want to be near it.
