The scent of chalk dust in the lecture hall, usually a symbol of learning and progress, now triggered a sour reaction in my stomach. Professor Singh was moving on.

My mouth tasted like metal. The words of the announcement seemed to echo in my skull. I felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to purge everything, to be rid of the tainted air.

I bolted from the hall, not wanting to hear another word. I felt as if the air was thick with something toxic. I needed to be alone, to be away from the source of this feeling.
