The vibrant colors of the office, which normally brought a sense of energy, seemed to assault Ben’s eyes. He watched, with a rising sense of nausea, as Emily was showered with praise. Each compliment was like a blow, each platitude a fresh wave of…something unpleasant.

He excused himself, needing to be away from the saccharine atmosphere. The air outside was no better; the sun felt harsh, the wind a biting reminder of the chill that had settled in his heart.

He felt a deep, almost physical revulsion at the thought of congratulating Emily. He imagined shaking her hand and felt a shudder run through him. He decided to take an early lunch, anything to escape the unbearable reality.
