The envelope, brittle with age, cracked in Clara's hands. The words on the page, her grandmother's looping script, seemed to leap out at her, each sentence a stab. "Unbearable pressure," it stated. "A violation of my principles." Clara's stomach churned. Her grandmother, the icon of grace and resilience, had been struggling, had been suffocating.

She wandered through the house, each object a painful reminder of a carefully constructed facade. The antique teacups, the perfectly arranged flowers, the meticulously maintained garden – all felt like a mockery.

Clara abruptly turned and went into the kitchen. The refrigerator's light illuminated the empty space. She could barely imagine eating.
