The contents of the letter, a neatly typed document, slammed into Sarah like a physical attack. Her father’s words, a careful recitation of grievances, felt like a personal insult. The tone was bitter, accusing, revealing a level of disappointment she hadn't known existed. Sarah’s hands started to tremble.

She felt the need to scrub herself raw, to wash away the stench of betrayal. She went upstairs, into the bathroom and turned the water on scalding hot. She didn’t know what to do.

She stared at her reflection, her face pale and drawn, the image a stranger staring back.
