The smell, damp earth and crushed leaves, clung to everything. Sarah covered her nose with her sleeve, her shoulders hunching slightly. Her neighbor, old man Hemmings, had been warned about that dead tree for years. She remembered the arguments, the raised voices, and now, this mess.

She picked up her phone to document the scene. Every image she took made her want to vomit. The thought of it all, the sheer slovenliness of it, made her clench her jaw. She hated him for it.

He stood there, mouth agape, staring at the destruction. She rolled her eyes and turned away. No words were needed.
