The sheer disregard. That’s what got to him. David, staring at the debris, felt his pulse begin to race. The sheer audacity of that tree! It had always been a looming, shadowy presence, and now, it lay across his meticulously crafted garden like some kind of monstrous, organic intruder.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, the scent of fresh cut grass now ruined by that awful wood rot. He swallowed hard, trying to keep his composure. He had to call his insurance company, a particularly annoying agency. The thought made him feel slightly ill.

His whole yard, trashed. It made his chest heavy with a strange tension.
