The lawyer’s office seemed to shrink around Amelia, the air thick with the smell of old paper and stale coffee. Her brother, Leo, beamed across the mahogany desk, a gleam in his eyes. He had inherited their grandfather's sprawling vineyard, a dream come true.

Amelia's portion? A dusty, dilapidated bookstore crammed with obscure, out-of-print tomes. The thought of sifting through the yellowed pages, the decaying bindings... A coldness spread through her.

She had to force herself to take a deep breath. She could feel a twitch in her eye, the urge to flee. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air, and fled the stuffy office.
