The phone call from a woman named Jenny had left Liam feeling profoundly unsettled. The revelation of a half-sister, born from a clandestine affair, felt like a physical blow. He slammed the phone down on the receiver so hard he thought it would break.

The comfortable familiarity of his own home suddenly felt oppressive, tainted. He wanted to rip out all the carpets and paint the walls white, to start again in a world unsullied by this knowledge.

He found himself pacing the room, his fists clenched, muttering under his breath. The thought of this other woman, this…Jenny…sent a shiver of revulsion through him.
