The air in the building felt stagnant, heavy. John’s throat constricted. He found the therapist's name on a sign: “Melissa Jones, PsyD.” Melissa Jones. His stomach lurched. It was the name of the girl who had ruthlessly ostracized him in high school. He could barely bring himself to look at the name.

He had expected kindness, understanding. He got the girl who once delighted in his torment. John felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

He pictured her, the way she used to sneer, the way she used to laugh. The thought made him feel like he was going to throw up. He started to turn to leave. He stopped. His life was in shambles and he decided to go in.
