The thought of new neighbors, new rules, new everything, filled his mouth with a metallic taste. He felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle. He gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.

He ran his hand along the peeling paint, the worn wood of the cabinets, the familiar imperfections that now felt like a lifeline. He wasn’t going to accept this transformation.

He walked to the window and stared out at the street, a place he knew, a place that was about to disappear. He felt a deep-seated revulsion.
