The silence that followed her father's pronouncement was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall. "I've decided to embrace Rastafarianism." Her mind raced, grasping at straws. The familiar landscape of their lives seemed to be morphing into something alien. She glanced at the bookshelf, at the well-worn volumes of history and philosophy her father had always loved. They seemed to mock her, silent witnesses to this dramatic upheaval. She bit the inside of her cheek, tasting blood.
