He walked the familiar route to the office, but the street seemed longer, the buildings taller. Each step felt like a conscious effort, as if his feet were lead weights. The sun, usually a welcome friend, glared down with a cruel intensity. It was an assault on his senses, intensifying the nausea that churned in his stomach. He saw Sarah ahead, her back straight, her stride purposeful. She seemed to know where she was going, what she was doing. He, on the other hand, felt adrift, a ship without a rudder. He checked his watch, the numbers blurred. Was he late? Early? He couldn't remember. He rubbed his temples, trying to clear the fog, but the world remained stubbornly out of focus. He stopped, his legs suddenly heavy, unsure if he should continue.
