The city noises, usually a comforting backdrop, now felt jarring, intrusive. He leaned against the brick wall, the rough texture a strange contrast to the emptiness he felt. His friend, Chloe, was the lead singer of an arena rock band. However, he had just learned she taught high school English. He knew her. He knew her better than anyone.
