The aroma of freshly baked bread usually soothed Liam, but today, it did nothing to dispel the fog that had settled in his mind. He found himself staring at the sign above the bakery door. The font looked all wrong.

“You remember the argument, right?” Sarah asked, her voice quiet.

Liam closed his eyes. “The argument? We always got along fine, we did.”

Sarah's face fell. "We were practically screaming at each other, Liam. About the bakery, about the rent, about everything."

He opened his eyes and looked at her. He felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of dread, as if a trapdoor had opened beneath him. He looked at the bakery's shelves, at the neatly arranged loaves of bread. The memory she described was completely, bafflingly absent. His stomach churned. He reached for a loaf of bread, as if that would anchor him to reality.
