"No," Amelia whispered, her voice barely audible. "Impossible." The crumpled napkin in her hand held the grim announcement: “The Spice Route, Permanently Closed.” She felt a wave of coldness wash over her, a sudden chill in the otherwise warm bakery. She thought she should leave, but she just stood there. She’d spent countless hours there, savoring the spicy curries and fragrant rice. She felt like she'd been pulled under water. The familiar aroma of cinnamon and sugar now filled her with a sense of impending doom.
